Ashok Lavasa Calls for Strengthening India’s E-Waste Recycling Ecosystem

India’s growing e-waste burden underscores the need for a robust, sustainable recycling framework. Ashok Lavasa, former Election Commissioner and environmental advocate, has underscored the importance of moving from a largely informal recycling sector to a structured, inclusive circular economy.

Despite the rollout of the E-Waste (Management) Rules, 2022, and the launch of the Central Pollution Control Board’s (CPCB) EPR (Extended Producer Responsibility) portal, a large volume of e-waste in India is still handled by informal players. This not only results in environmental degradation but also exposes unregulated workers to significant health hazards.

Lavasa emphasized the need to bridge the gap by integrating informal recyclers into the formal waste management ecosystem. This can be achieved by offering access to training, tools, and formal recognition, allowing them to contribute more safely and effectively.

Producers, on their part, must be held accountable for their responsibilities under EPR mandates—ensuring transparent, trackable, and responsible e-waste disposal practices.

A more coordinated effort involving government bodies, private enterprises, and civil society is essential to scale formal recycling infrastructure and improve ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) outcomes. These steps are vital for building a greener, safer, and more circular economy in India.
