Maharashtra Aims to Lead India’s AI & Data Center Revolution, Targets $1.5 Trillion Economy

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, speaking at the Nasscom Technology and Leadership Forum 2025 in Mumbai, emphasized the state’s growing leadership in artificial intelligence (AI) and data infrastructure. Maharashtra, home to India’s financial capital, Mumbai, now accounts for nearly 60% of the country’s data center capacity, with major hubs in Navi Mumbai.

At the World Economic Forum in Davos, Maharashtra signed MoUs worth $20 billion to develop data centers, further solidifying its status as India’s data center hub. Additionally, the state secured $8.3 billion from Amazon Web Services (AWS) as part of its $12.7 billion investment plan to expand cloud infrastructure in India by 2030.

To support this growth sustainably, Maharashtra is ramping up green energy production. The state plans to increase power capacity to 75,000 gigawatts by 2030, with 52% coming from green and non-conventional sources, up from the current 45,000 gigawatts.

Fadnavis also highlighted Maharashtra’s ambitious economic roadmap, projecting a $1 trillion economy within 4-5 years. With strategic planning, he believes Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) alone could reach $1.5 trillion, unlocking vast opportunities in technology, AI, and digital transformation
