As quantum computing inches closer to mainstream adoption, NITI Aayog, in collaboration with the Data Security Council of India, has outlined a strategic roadmap to safeguard India’s national security and digital infrastructure.
In the March 2024 edition of “NITI Frontier Tech Hub’s Future Front”, the think tank highlighted the potential risks of quantum advancements, including the ability to break encryption, disrupt financial markets, and revolutionize military technology. To prevent strategic blind spots, it has proposed a task force to monitor global quantum progress and bolster India’s cybersecurity resilience.
Key recommendations include:
Tracking global quantum developments through a dedicated task force
Assessing vulnerabilities in critical national systems
Implementing post-quantum cryptography (PQC) strategies for secure transitions
Developing crypto agility guidelines to adapt to breakthroughs
Forging global partnerships and boosting R&D funding
NITI Aayog CEO BVR Subrahmanyam emphasized that India must not only participate in the quantum revolution but lead it. The government has already committed INR 6,003 Cr under the National Quantum Mission (NQM) to develop an indigenous quantum technology ecosystem.
