Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma Launches AI News Anchor “Ankita” to Modernise Governance and Citizen Engagement

In a major leap toward digital governance, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma unveiled the state’s first artificial intelligence-powered news anchor, “Ankita,” on Wednesday. The launch is part of Assam’s broader initiative to modernise government communications and improve public engagement through emerging technologies.

Sharing the announcement on social media platform X, CM Sarma wrote, “Meet Ankita, our AI anchor who brings you the latest updates on the recent Assam Cabinet meeting.” Ankita delivered key cabinet decisions in fluent Assamese with lifelike voice modulation and human-like facial expressions. Among the highlights were the renaming of Dibrugarh Airport after cultural icon Bhupen Hazarika and a one-time financial grant for tea garden workers.

This initiative is consistent with the Chief Minister’s ongoing push for tech adoption in the state. Sarma has been a vocal advocate of AI and frequently encourages students to explore artificial intelligence and machine learning.

Ankita’s launch follows other AI milestones in the region, such as “Iris,” Assam’s first AI teacher, and national developments like Doordarshan Kisan’s AI anchors “Krish” and “Bhoomi.” Officials believe such digital tools will make governance more inclusive and relatable for tech-savvy citizens.
