ChatGPT Surges to 400 Million Weekly Users, Doubling Growth in Six Months

OpenAI’s ChatGPT has achieved a remarkable milestone, doubling its weekly active users to 400 million in February 2025, according to a report by Andreessen Horowitz (a16z). The AI chatbot experienced rapid adoption following the release of new models and features, reversing a growth plateau from March 2023 to April 2024.

Key drivers of this resurgence include GPT-4o’s multimodal capabilities, which significantly boosted user engagement between April and May 2024. Additionally, Advanced Voice Mode fueled further adoption from July to August, while the o1 model series accelerated growth between September and October.

ChatGPT’s mobile usage has also climbed steadily, increasing between 5% to 15% per month over the past year. Of its 400 million weekly active users, a staggering 175 million now access the platform via mobile devices.

Meanwhile, competition in the AI space is intensifying. China’s DeepSeek, launched in early 2025, quickly captured 15% of ChatGPT’s mobile user base within 10 days. However, despite its 545% theoretical daily profit margin, its overall market presence still trails behind OpenAI’s ChatGPT.

The report also highlighted that niche AI tools in areas like photo editing, nutrition, and language learning generate higher revenue per user compared to mass-market AI apps.
