In a significant move to enhance AI governance, the Indian government has proposed establishing a dedicated AI Governance Board. This board will review and authorize AI applications, ensuring they align with established domestic and international legal frameworks.
The recommendation came as part of the Competency Framework for AI for Public Sector Officials, introduced during the launch of the AIKosha and AI Compute Portal by MeitY on March 6.
The AI Governance Board is expected to provide critical oversight throughout the AI lifecycle, ensuring projects meet technical standards while addressing societal and ethical concerns. This aligns with India’s commitment to fostering innovation while safeguarding public interests.
The Competency Framework emphasizes building AI literacy among public sector officials, addressing skill gaps identified in the AI Readiness Index 2023 and World Bank GovTech Maturity Index 2022. By defining learning pathways, competency benchmarks, and targeted training, the initiative aims to empower officials with the knowledge needed to leverage AI for improved service delivery and informed policymaking.
This structured approach will play a pivotal role in ensuring India’s AI initiatives are effective, transparent, and ethical.
