Michael Seibel Transitions to Partner Emeritus at YC, Paving the Way for a New Chapter

Michael Seibel, a key figure in Y Combinator’s success, announced on X that he is stepping into a partner emeritus role after more than 12 years with the accelerator. Y Combinator CEO Garry Tan confirmed the transition in a blog post, highlighting Seibel’s remarkable journey from a YC founder to a pivotal leader within the organization.

Seibel first joined Y Combinator as a founder, participating in the program twice—once with Justin.TV and later with Socialcam. Over the years, he took on several leadership roles, including group partner, managing director, and CEO of the accelerator. He had already begun stepping back from operational responsibilities, writing in a 2023 YC blog post that he was ready to transition out of leadership.

His departure may have been in motion since 2022 when Garry Tan was appointed as YC’s CEO, a move that surprised some employees who expected Seibel to take the role. Looking ahead, Seibel expressed interest in public service, stating, “Government was the passion of my youth, and I’m excited to reengage.”

As Y Combinator prepares for its Spring 2025 batch, Seibel leaves behind a lasting legacy of innovation and mentorship.
