Northumbria University to Offer Free Access to Claude for Education AI Platform

Northumbria University has announced it will roll out Claude for Education, a cutting-edge AI platform tailored for higher education, to all students and staff by autumn 2025. This move makes Northumbria only the second UK university—alongside the London School of Economics—to adopt the platform, joining a growing number of leading global institutions embracing responsible AI integration in academia.

Developed by Anthropic, Claude for Education is a next-generation AI assistant designed to be ethical, secure, and aligned with academic integrity. It serves as a 24/7 study partner, helping students develop critical thinking and research skills, rather than offering direct answers. The platform ensures data security, copyright compliance, and promotes responsible AI use.

The initiative aligns with Northumbria’s reputation as a UK leader in responsible AI research. The university recently launched its Centre for Responsible AI and leads the UKRI Centre for Doctoral Training in Citizen-Centred AI.

Professor Graham Wynn emphasized that the initiative addresses the needs of digitally native students and eliminates digital inequality. “Providing equitable access to powerful AI tools will prepare our students for future workplaces and help us lead the way in ethical AI adoption,” he said.

The university is now collaborating with Anthropic to set up infrastructure and training ahead of the launch.
