Google to Invest $10 Billion in 1-Gigawatt Data Centre Cluster in Visakhapatnam Startup Stories

Global tech giant Google is set to invest $10 billion to establish a 1-gigawatt data centre cluster in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, marking its largest direct investment in India’s digital economy. The project, expected to be operational by July 2028, will span three campuses across Adavivaram, Tarluvada, and Rambilli villages, forming the foundation of India’s first international AI infrastructure hub.

The proposal is scheduled for approval by the Andhra Pradesh State Investment Promotion Board, chaired by Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu. The development will include high-capacity submarine cables, dedicated cable landing stations, and metro fibre lines to support large-scale enterprise and cloud operations.

This strategic expansion follows Google Asia-Pacific’s site inspection in May, led by Andhra Pradesh IT and Electronics Minister Nara Lokesh, and aims to bolster India’s AI ecosystem while catering to the growing data centre demand from global technology leaders including Amazon, Microsoft, and Google. These companies currently account for 30% of India’s data centre requirements.

India’s data centre sector is projected to attract up to ₹2 trillion in investments over the next five to seven years, with plans to add 7.1 gigawatts of new capacity. The Visakhapatnam cluster will strengthen India’s position in global AI and digital infrastructure, enabling hyperscale workloads for enterprise and cloud services.
