Google Introduces the ‘Gemini Era’ of Gmail with AI-Powered Inbox Intelligence AI

Google has announced a major update to Gmail, marking the beginning of what it calls the “Gemini era” of email, designed to help users manage growing inbox volumes and access information more efficiently. Powered by Gemini 3, the new AI-driven capabilities begin rolling out on January 9 in the US, starting with English, with additional languages and regions expected to follow.

A key enhancement is the introduction of AI Overviews in Gmail, which allow users to instantly summarise long email threads and ask questions using natural language. By synthesising information across emails, Gemini delivers precise, context-aware answers without the need for keyword searches. AI-generated conversation summaries will be available globally at no cost, while direct inbox Q&A will be limited to Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers.

Google is also expanding access to its AI-assisted writing tools. Help Me Write and enhanced Suggested Replies are now available to all users, enabling faster and more personalised email drafting. A new Proofread feature, focused on grammar, tone, and style, will be exclusive to paid AI subscribers.

Additionally, Google is testing AI Inbox, a redesigned view that highlights priority emails, deadlines, and reminders. Broader availability is expected in the coming months, with Google emphasising strong privacy and security protections.
