OpenAI CEO Sam Altman addressed the United Nations Security Council in New York during the 81st UN General Assembly, warning that the world could lose control of the future if AI development moves too quickly.
In an interview with India Today Global, Altman said one of the key risks is that AI systems could advance so rapidly that people may no longer be able to understand what is happening or intervene when necessary.
Altman argued that the potential benefits of AI should not justify accepting excessive technological risks. He said competition between AI companies should not lead to rushed decisions and stressed that OpenAI is not committed to a race that prevents it from slowing down when necessary.
He also said OpenAI has slowed development unilaterally in the past and would do so again if required, emphasizing the need for sufficient guarantees around AI alignment, monitorability and safety.
The Bigger Picture: As AI capabilities advance, questions around human oversight, model safety and the ability to monitor increasingly autonomous systems are becoming central to global AI governance discussions.
Altman’s comments highlight the growing importance of building safety, monitoring and alignment mechanisms alongside increasingly capable AI systems.
