In a landmark collaboration, Razorpay, the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), and OpenAI have introduced Agentic Payments on ChatGPT, a first-of-its-kind initiative that integrates artificial intelligence with India’s digital payment ecosystem. The innovation aims to make payments more conversational, intelligent, and seamless, revolutionizing how users interact with commerce platforms.

Powered by Axis Bank and Airtel Payments Bank, and built on UPI innovations such as UPI Circle and UPI Reserve Pay, Agentic Payments allows users to discover products, compare options, and complete purchases—all within a single ChatGPT conversation. BigBasket has become one of the first merchants to enable this AI-driven experience, enabling users to shop for groceries effortlessly through natural language prompts.

Harshil Mathur, CEO and Co-founder of Razorpay, emphasized that this breakthrough transforms AI assistants from discovery tools into “personal shopping agents.” Echoing this vision, Sohini Rajola, Executive Director of Growth at NPCI, highlighted that the initiative merges AI and UPI to make transactions “intuitive, intelligent, and inclusive.” Oliver J., Managing Director of International Strategy at OpenAI, added that AI is evolving to help people not just find products but buy them seamlessly.

With this collaboration, India takes a pioneering step in AI-powered commerce, setting the stage for broader adoption of intelligent payment solutions that enhance convenience for consumers and unlock new opportunities for merchants across the country.
