US-based semiconductor equipment giant KLA is considering establishing a manufacturing facility in India, potentially expanding its footprint beyond research and development as the country strengthens its semiconductor ecosystem.
The development follows the company’s planned ₹3,600 crore investment in a major research and development campus in Chennai. In February 2026, KLA signed a memorandum of understanding with the Tamil Nadu government to establish the R&D and innovation campus, which could generate up to 4,000 jobs over the next decade.
The company also opened a ₹2,300 crore R&D and innovation hub in Chennai in January, with capacity to accommodate up to 1,300 employees.
KLA specialises in semiconductor inspection, metrology and process-control equipment that helps chipmakers detect defects, measure microscopic structures and maintain manufacturing quality.
A manufacturing facility in India could further strengthen the country’s semiconductor supply chain and support its ambitions to expand domestic chipmaking capabilities. However, the proposal remains under consideration, with the location, investment size and construction timeline yet to be confirmed.
