Staples described India as one of GitLab’s most important markets, highlighting the country’s substantial engineering community as a key factor behind the proposed expansion.
The development follows GitLab’s June announcement that it would exit 22 countries, reducing its geographical footprint by approximately 37% and cutting 350 jobs, representing around 14% of its workforce. Staples said these markets had relatively few employees and limited business activity. GitLab now operates in approximately 40 countries, down from more than 60.
The company is also transitioning towards a more consumption-based product portfolio under its latest roadmap, which includes the Duo Agent Platform. Its strategy focuses on building trust in AI-generated code as enterprises increasingly adopt AI-powered software development tools.
GitLab’s potential India office reflects the country’s growing role in global AI and software development.
