Indian Institute of Technology Delhi, in collaboration with Defence Research and Development Organisation, has achieved a significant milestone in Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) by successfully demonstrating secure quantum communication over a distance of 1 kilometer. The breakthrough includes both fiber-based and free-space quantum communication capabilities, marking a major step forward in India’s quantum technology landscape.
This development aligns with the country’s ambitious National Quantum Mission, which aims to build highly secure and unhackable communication infrastructure. The system achieved a secure key rate of approximately 240 bits per second while maintaining a Quantum Bit Error Rate (QBER) below 7 percent, highlighting its reliability and efficiency.
Quantum Key Distribution leverages the fundamental principles of quantum physics to enable virtually unbreakable encryption, making it crucial for safeguarding sensitive data across defense, banking, and national security sectors. This achievement positions India at the forefront of next-generation secure communication technologies.
